So, what's this Shibboleth stuff, anyway?

The JISC (who sound as if they ought to be an alien race, from EE "Doc" Smith or Doctor Who) have had an animation produced that does a pretty good job of explaining the principles behind what I do during the day.

It's not going to help you set up your own Shibboleth Entity, but it does explain why you might want to.

How does Shibboleth compare to OpenID?

I've not really looked at OpenID (but was pleasantly surprised to discover that my ProtectNetwork typekey ID worked as an OpenID one, too). The short answer, apparently, is that OpenID doesn't use SAML, but there are currently negotiations between the two communities to render them compatible.

There's a comparative article about identity management that may be of interest, but it looks as if they're also more useful in different areas: Shibboleth for groups working together; OpenID for individual access to resources.

Hmmm. I think I'm going to have to go away and do some more reading....

OpenID rocks (your LJ is one, as is a technorati profile and a few other unexpected things; all my domains are for me).

Hadn't heard of Shibboleth, will have to dig when I've a bit more time; really a big fan of distributed ID schemes, I like making comments and 'proving' I am the writer of said journal or owner of said site.

Absolutely. When I got the comment it was 'which of my new batch of finds did I use?', but it's actually my original default. You play(ed)?
