Read The Internet: Where Entitlement Goes To Level Up

Person #1: "I live on [two streets over]. Can you bring me all the medium-sized clothes?"
Me: "No, it’s pick up only."
Person #1: "How can you be so rude?! I need these clothes!"
Me: "Then I guess you should figure out how to get here."

My parents love to watch cooking shows, particularly America’s Test Kitchen and the YouTube show Food Wishes. My mother finds the voice of Chef John, host of Food Wishes, extremely soothing, which is funny because he has a wildly unusual vocal cadence. If you’ve never seen a Food Wishes video, look one up and brace yourself.

Yesterday they stumbled over ATK’s Detroit Pizza segment, and then looked up Chef John’s video about it, and Mum texted me to ask if I ever made Detroit pizza. It’s pretty much the only kind I make, so she asked if I’d make it with them when I visit home in a few days. She even spent this morning shopping for the right kind of pan. She’s thrilled that I make my own pizza sauce, so now she’s making a grocery list for what she needs to buy before I arrive. I also pointed out that there’s a Jet’s Pizza on the way from the Austin airport to their place, so the plan is to pick me up, stop at Jet’s to get a “benchmark”, then go home, where we will sample Jet’s while I make the dough (which needs to rise slow and cold overnight) and the sauce, and the next day we will make our own.

I am bringing home, in my checked luggage, a bag of King Arthur pizza flour and a bottle of my preferred pizza sauce seasoning (Mie Radici brand).

It’s both funny and sweet that a love of Detroit pizza appears to be genetic, even for a family that has zero historical connection to Detroit.

PIZZA SUCCESS.

A photograph of an uncooked Detroit pizza in a metal pan, with three thick stripes of sauce on top of the cheese. Some will say the pepperoni on top of the cheese is heretical, but it should be crispy dammit. Thank you for attending my alt text editorial.ALT
The cooked pizza, or rather what remains of it, resting in the pan, golden and red. ALT

I forgot to take a picture of the cooked pizza before we devastated it, but the folks liked it and that’s the important part. And now they know how to make it, so they have vowed to try it on their own and send me photos. Updates as warranted.

Up by four or five o’clock, and to the office, and there drew up the agreement between the King and Sir John Winter about the Forrest of Deane; and having done it, he came himself (I did not know him to be the Queen’s Secretary before, but observed him to be a man of fine parts); and we read it, and both liked it well. That done, I turned to the Forrest of Deane, in Speede’s Mapps, and there he showed me how it lies; and the Lea-bayly, with the great charge of carrying it to Lydny, and many other things worth my knowing; and I do perceive that I am very short in my business by not knowing many times the geographical part of my business.

At my office till Mr. Moore took me out and at my house looked over our papers again, and upon our evening accounts did give full discharges one to the other, and in his and many other accounts I perceive I shall be better able to give a true balance of my estate to myself within a day or two than I have been this twelve months.

Then he and I to Alderman Backwell’s and did the like there, and I gave one receipt for all the money I have received thence upon the receipt of my Lord’s crusados. Then I went to the Exchange, and hear that the merchants have a great fear of a breach with the Spaniard; for they think he will not brook our having Tangier, Dunkirk, and Jamaica; and our merchants begin to draw home their estates as fast as they can. Then to Pope’s Head Ally, and there bought me a pair of tweezers, cost me 14s., the first thing like a bawble I have bought a good while, but I do it with some trouble of mind, though my conscience tells me that I do it with an apprehension of service in my office to have a book to write memorandums in, and a pair of compasses in it; but I confess myself the willinger to do it because I perceive by my accounts that I shall be better by 30l. than I expected to be. But by tomorrow night I intend to see to the bottom of all my accounts. Then home to dinner, where Mr. Moore met me. Then he went away, and I to the office and dispatch much business. So in the evening, my wife and I and Jane over the water to the Halfway-house, a pretty, pleasant walk, but the wind high. So home again and to bed.

Read Get Him Some Running Shoes So He Can Run Far Away

Customer: "Somebody recommended these for my husband, who then bought these yesterday! Who in their right mind makes sneakers this color?"
Me: "They’re designed to help runners stay seen at night. Their bright color is actually part of the advertizing."
Customer: "Well… the employee who sold these to my husband said they were 'popular.' That’s misleading."

Today is cloudy and muggy.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.  I also saw a male cardinal and a squirrel up in the trees.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/20/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/20/25 -- I watered the new picnic table garden.  I picked the first 'Chocolate Sprinkles' tomato and several 'Toscana' strawberries.  I love the Toscanas and will definitely buy more if I see them next spring.

I love that the subhead references why ginger cats are.....like that. :D

It's interesting reading! I have trouble following discussions of genetics, always have -- I understand the theory of the punnet square but I can never quite get a clear grip on it in a functional sense. Still, cool to see the science being done!

Read Commission Without The Commiserating

Years ago, when I was starting out as an illustrator, I worked a full-time job and took commissions on the side. As I was still starting out, I didn’t charge as much as I perhaps should have, but not so little that I was basically working for free.

I survived my first week at work. I went on-site in Edinburgh for the first three days, initially picking up my shiny new MacBook M4 Pro running Sequoia. The office turns out to be a pleasant dog-friendly space with the amenities one might hope for. Being a hybrid worker, I book desk space when I need it from the hot-desking pool. The desks are motorized adjustable desks that can become standing desks. There are very many onboarding things to do over the coming weeks, a lot to do and learn, and plenty of friendly, helpful people to meet. Despite the open-plan layout, it's not too hard to focus, not very distracting.

As usual, there's some wrestling with the Mac but, in all fairness, plenty of things did just work quite well. The most obvious wrestling was the usual: Mac users love to see things in blurry-text. Okay, all the problems I ran into this week arise because I have the temerity to plug the Mac into non-Apple hardware. For instance, the external monitors on the desks have low pixel density and recent versions of the OS have removed useful options for fixing that. I was able to solve the blur by installing iTerm2 and unchecking Anti-Aliased. Other pending issues include it applying the wrong keymap for my external keyboard and imposing some godawful acceleration on my scroll-wheel but they're in progress, I want to get some actual work done too.

Nice though the office environment is, being in transit for at least three hours per day makes me appreciate fully remote work: Wednesday felt as if it should already be Friday. I am currently taking the more expensive option: subway over to Queen Street, and the frequent faster trains aren't as crowded as I'd heard, quite tolerable. (Work has provided my laptop a privacy screen to limit viewing angle.) My current route to the office includes climbing the 124 News Steps which means I get the hardest part of my workday out of the way at the start. The bus would be cheapest except I'd probably want extra bus to and from the stations: at each end, the bus station is further than the railway. A compromise might be the limited rail ticket: I'd end up working long days but could probably just walk at both ends around the intercity portion. Belatedly, I also wonder if I should be masking for the railway journey: perhaps it's outstandingly the riskiest among my habits.

Simplify email system

This causes the old TheSchwartz worker to simply enqueue an SQS job in the new task system, so we don't have any duplicate mail sending logic. Additionally, this standardizes on Net::SMTP which is the modern module now that it supports TLS. Also fix up the configs so this doesn't reference SES anymore since it's not specific to that.

Yesterday morning Z. was watching Kim Possible during breakfast, and I burst out laughing when one of the villains[^1] said "This is not a party. This is not a disco. This is not fooling around." ^^

[^1] For those of you interested enough in Kim Possible to want to know, it was Señor Senior Sr., so the voice actor was either Earl Boen (who was Dr. Silberman in Terminator 2) or Ricardo Montalban (who needs no introduction).

ETA: I couldn't not look it up. This was s1e11 ("Coach Possible"), so Señor Senior Sr. was played by Earl Boen.
