Almost certainly because of it. Well, it's not really down to the shop, the networks themselves still usually value new connections higher than continuing ones. And unless the new connection is on a different network, you have to change the number.
Why? Don't ask me, I've only worked on the T-Mobile Commissions system for four years, and I still can't understand why our users use it that way!
BTW, I think 07940 and 07961 mean you stayed with T-Mobile - that's useful information for people on other networks that have higher off-net call rates. (As you might have, unless you have an "Everyone" tariff from us.)

I thought all the main networks had sorted number portability now? I did it with Cellnet last year where I had one account on one billing system and wanted to transfer to another type of account. It was a big pain in the arse but they eventually sorted it out. I can't stand telling anybody about changes of bank account numbers, email addresses, street addresses and phone numbers - it's just all too much like hard work :-)

T-Mobile used to shoot themselves in the foot when they refused to allow a prepay T-Mobile user (probably low value) to move to a post-pay T-Mobile user (high, guaranteed value) with the same number: they got that sorted out at last a few months ago. Go the other way though, and it'll mean an inconvenient change of number...

Never let it be said that the operators make things easy for their customers - having been on the supply side for a few years I could rant up a storm about Mobile Network Operators and their actions. Frankly glad to be concentrating on the phones side of the busines now.

And I was offered a rate (including moving my number) of X, or if I decided to have a new number I could have X-5 and keep the old PAYG number and sim to use in another handset for friends visiting from the US etc. ... so that's why I changed my mobile number last summer to

Sorry for shouting but so many people haven't figured that out yet (even though it was on the answer message on the old number for a while ... of course people sending me SMS messages at the old number don't get to hear the message and there's no "auto-reply/auto-forward" on SMSs) ... and yes, for the telepedantic among you, it's actually 07769 903675, but I find it easier to remember as above.
