(no subject)

The following is derived from the text of the Declaration of Calton Hill as displayed at petitiononline.com:

We the undersigned call for an independent Scottish republic built on the principles of liberty, equality, diversity and solidarity.

These principles can never be put into practice while Scotland remains subordinate to the hierarchical and anti-democratic institutions of the British State.

I missed out a couple, yes to freedom of information and yes to not fighting in silly wars.

A written constitution won't protect freedom unless it's drafted properly, and more importantly _enforced_.

Then there's no reason not to call for an English Republic along the same lines; nothing said here applies exclusively to Scotland. But I don't think anyone is, not at the moment.

Looks like everyone is in favour of general, liberal, niceness. And strangely, most of them like the idea of an independent Scotland too. Obviously they believe that Jack McConnell is better than Tony Blair :->

Ah, oops, can you blow up my answer? I had not seen the link then (very odd).

Now, where's my negative vote/signature?

I can agree with most of that, except the conclusions. There are plenty of other solutions. And the bit about not putting up barriers probably applies better if you're not calling for independence - it's slightly undermined by the overall goal. In this case, it would probably be more accurate to say that a bit of separation isn't always a bad thing.

Also, I've been reading a couple of very disturbing things about the US recently - a written constitution is no panacaea.
