I've not really looked at OpenID (but was pleasantly surprised to discover that my ProtectNetwork typekey ID worked as an OpenID one, too). The short answer, apparently, is that OpenID doesn't use SAML, but there are currently negotiations between the two communities to render them compatible.
There's a comparative article about identity management that may be of interest, but it looks as if they're also more useful in different areas: Shibboleth for groups working together; OpenID for individual access to resources.
Hmmm. I think I'm going to have to go away and do some more reading....
