Met [livejournal.com profile] tigermoth for lunch, but it was a bit late in the day so several places were either closed (Kublai Khan's) or just closing as we got there (Britannia Spice). Eventually ended up having cocktails and a collection of starters at Mariachi Mexicana: pretty good, and we should go back there sometime when we're not so rushed.

Made it to the Pond later than I'd intended, and a little later than I said I'd be there, so managed to miss Nojay (WINOLJ).

Sara (WINOLJE) arrived next, and was followed a little later by [livejournal.com profile] autopope. Next to arrive was [livejournal.com profile] yonmei, then Phil (WINOLJ but has a weblog), or was it [livejournal.com profile] princealbert and Kirsten (WIANOLJ).

Tea, German beers, cider, gin and coffee were consumed, as were giant pretzels and garlicky olives.

The plan had been to leave the Pond for the Holyrood at about seven or so, but we never really seemed to get round to leaving (Roy, Kirsten and Charlie headed off to eat and such, and I think they ended up in the Holyrood later), so I think it was about half nine or so when we did finally leave, staggering gently across Leith Links.

This was when I got a call from [livejournal.com profile] purplerabbits saying that the Holyrood was pretty well packed out, and that she was heading for K Jacksons, so we did likewise. Pleasantly surprised on arrival to see Doug (WIDTIOLJ), passing through between Bristol and Falmouth, with the usual suspects.

Eventually went from KJ's to Favorit. I think the plan had been merely to look into Favorit as we thought it'd be too full on a Saturday, and then continue down to the Holyrood, but there were tables, and we weren't sure if the Holyrood was still open.

From Favorit to a bench in the Meadows for a while, and then back briefly to Andrew's (WIANOLJ) before taxi-ing home to collapse at about four.

Slept incredibly soundly and for rather a long time, before spending the afternoon messing around with computers.

Time, gentlemen, please!

The Hollyrood was not merely packed, it was jammed solid -- everyone who had ever worked there, and anyone who knew them, and anyone who drank there, and anyone who knew them, seemed to have turned up. I ran into [livejournal.com profile] green_amber, visiting the pub for the first time ever. Ran into other lj folks too, enough that I seemed to be going by two names all evening. There was a real festive atmosphere, speeches, staff forming a line on top of the bar, applause. By 1am, all the hand-pumps and even the fizzbeer had been drunk; by the time [livejournal.com profile] feorag and I left at about 2:30am, the fridge was empty, the ordinary spirits were gone, and the single malts were down to the dregs.

Goddamn, we drank the Hollyrood dry!

I cannot believe we did that. It shouldn't be possible. But neither should be the pub closing for good ...

(Weirdly, I had no hangover today; side-effects from too much yeasty German beer, sure, but no headache, sweats, chills, puking, or other symptoms. Despite five pints, an alcopop, and some single malts.)

It was one hell of a wake for one hell of a good pub.

Re: Time, gentlemen, please!

Yeh it was a very weird thing, the fact that every single person I talked to (most of whom I didn't know at all, or very vaguely) was on LJ. And I kept saying "I'm [livejournal.com profile] green_amber, but you won't know me, I'm not on your Friends list" and they did! Weird. V weird. I felt like I'd dscovered where the Masons hid, or something.

It does sound like it was an excellent night. I wish I'd made it to the Holyrood at some point.

Please accept my sincere if belated wishes for your birthday to be happy and for many equally happy returns of the day.

Happy belated birthday - was planning to say hi in the Holyrood, but since you didn't go anyway, and I ran away, accept this late *grins*

Thanks for that. Was going to say "will catch up with you in the Holyrood one of these days", but CAN'T anymore.... Waaah!

Damn, the hole left by the Holyrood will be hard to fill.

We could always recolonise once the refurb is over...

Thing is, it's the space that's hard to replace - most of the suggestions on Edinburgers are simply too small...

Re: Too embarrassed to leave name

"Who Is (Also) Not on Live Journal (Either)" should cover most of the acronyms used above. Oh, and "Who I don't think is on Live Journal".

The first time I saw "(WINOLJ)" used, I tried to look at http://www.livejournal.com/users/winolj and was confused by the fact that it didn't exist.

Re: Too embarrassed to leave name

I've just been Googling (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=winolj&btnG=Google+Search) for that word, and yours was the first entry I saw that actually said what it meant.

Well done!

I think the Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=winolj&r=f), or similar, needs that in there.

I've been reading it as "Weirdo In Need Of LJ", based on what I'd imagine the people I've seen using the term would say.
