From my weblog, but duplicated here 'cos it's scary:

A headline (Government sweeps aside privacy rights) and a leader (British Liberty, RIP) from today's Guardian. It's not just the Police, Intelligence services, and the tax authorities who can get at anyone's telephone and internet communications data without a warrant or court order, but seven Whitehall departments, every local authority in the country, NHS bodies in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and 11 other public bodies ranging from the postal services commission to the food standards agency....

But it seems it's all necessary to continue the War on Terrorism. So that's all right, then.

The more I learn about the government

the less I trust it. And of course the data protection laws don't apply to the government do they ...

Police State

Well, yes. Wandering along to Strawberry Fair last weekend, we were, as ever, overflown almost constantly by the standard (for this part of Cambridge) helicopter. We get it twice a week during the footie season since we're near the United ground. It's noisy, and I'm sure unnecessary, either for Strawberry Fair or the football (I used to walk home of an evening through the visiting fans and most of them were exceedingly pleasant, friendly folk). The chopper is so intrusively noisy that it's a disturbance even in the house and I'm wondering if there's any way of "shooting it down" with some sort of noise abatement anti-noise pollution stance--though a suitably aimed missile would be more satisfying! (That's for the snoops and spooks!)
At least, on Saturday, we passed no CCTVs.
Off to reread 1984: in a spirit of nostalgia

Just spent 15 minutes on http://www.faxyourmp.com/ and I recommend everyone else in the UK does the same. Next step is to try and find a political party, any political party at all, that's opposed to this nonsense and offer to help out.

Sounds like a plan. I've paraphrased your suggestion over onto [livejournal.com profile] ciphergoth's LJ where the same subject has been raised.

Fax your MP

I've quoted my fax on my journal. It may not be right for anyone reading this, but it's a starter for 10.
