Well, that was a surprise. I've just received a package from Artichoke, the production company who liaised with Royal de Luxe for the Sultan's Elephant thing last May.

There's a short DVD of the event (I'm briefly in the middle of it - almost exactly, actually, just past the five minute mark on a ten minute video) in a card folder with some postcards, and a newsletter that - among other things - lists the benevols, the yellow-shirted volunteers (but it's the version of the list from the newsletter that came out during the event, and so is missing at least one person). Oh, and there's going to be a book, with pictures, and people's memories and stuff.

And that reminds me, of course, that I've not posted my full write-up yet....

Even half a write-up would be mighty interesting.

I take it it's already written? Mine's here, in case reminders would be useful.

Bran the Bronzesmith

Hi Steve,

Completely off topic, but I wasn't sure you pick up notes from your old blog. Did you ever find a copy of Bran the Bronzesmith? I suddenly remembered it myself only a couple of days ago (borrowed it from a pile of books in a store room in my secondary school, probably about 1980). It had long dropped off the reading list, but was a fabulous read.

Yes, I did, thanks. It was indeed as good as I remembered it being - I'd been afraid it wouldn't have been.

It'd have made a great film in the Swords-and-Sandals style, I reckon, but they'd have had to make Arril a girl, or something....

Please tell me - where did you find a copy? I remember it as one of the set books for my first years in 1968 but we never did finish it. I'd love to lay hands on a copy!

Hi Marjie,

I had an email out of the blue from someone who managed to find a second copy. I'm still looking for one, though, with the coloured pictures/jacket.

Good hunting!

I was right! It was mighty interesting.

I'm not sure what "torchbearers" are, but I gather that in various cities, there are subcultures of people with experience in parades and crowd control, and that if you are planning some kind of spectacle, it is good to get in touch with these people.
