This is looking trickier than I thought: I'd like to leave Prague on Tuesday, and need to be in Berlin for early evening on the Thursday. I don't want to take two night trains, and I'm not sure about spending two nights in the same place on the way...

I'd looked at the idea of going to Nuremberg or Munich, but they involve really rather long sleeper trains. I'd like to see some of the East, so perhaps Dresden? Anyone reading this been travelling in this part of the world?

But commiseration: when I took a side trip to Berlin from a two-week business trip in Geneva I was dismayed at the distances and times involved in traveling around Germany. It was far larger than my mental picture had made it: clearly a modern state, unified by high-speed telecommunications and transport in C. 19.

I guess you're looking for something in Eastern Prussia, which is, um, Brandenburg and Saxony? Seems like you're already sloshing with Schlossen, which are the major feature of tourist web sites. There's some Napoleonic Wars history available, if that's of interest. Or go to Jena and see if they have any Zeiss (or Leica?) optical museums, which I couldn't say for sure exist.
